Walk 3 - Grimsargh Reservoirs

This is a comparatively short stroll, which can easily be done in under an hour – even after allowing some time to enjoy the views along the way

The route can be viewed on the following maps:

  • OS Landranger Map No 102 – 1:50,000 scale
  • OS Explorer Map No 286 – 1:25,000 scale – preferable for walking

The route and photos are available in a printable version to download here.

The Route is described from Grimsargh Green.

Walk along Preston Road towards Longridge.

You’ll pass Brown's garage and then, just before The Plough, take the left turn along the footpath.

You are now following the route of the old railway.

Continue along in this direction and you will cross a series of stiles.

  Footpath Alongside the Plough

Keep an eye out for a stile off to the right, down a bit of a slope.

   Turn off the Railway Footpath

Follow the path across the field (pictured) to the track. Turn left on to the track.

Across Field to Track Along Reservoir

Follow the track until you see another stile to the right. Cross this stile into what is often a very wet and muddy field!

   Stile into Muddy Field

After the next stile (which you don’t always have to climb over, as in this photo) turn immediately right.

   Redundant Stile

Ahead of you is another ladder stile, followed by a steep climb up to the top of the embankment. Turn left at the top and follow the path around the reservoir and along the causeway that goes between two of the reservoirs.

   Ladder Stile

Depending on the time of year and day when you do this walk, you could be treated to a fabulous view from the causeway, like the one pictured here.

There are a great many different species of birds that frequent this site – 125 have been recorded. Hence the area is now being referred to as “Grimsargh “Wetlands” to recognise its value as a haven for birdlife.

   Sunset Across the Reservoir

Continue and you will cross the delightful gurgling stream, pictured left through the railings of the footbridge. You then reach Preston Road and, turning right will bring you back to The Green.
